Maker Faire Kansas City 2012 Highlights

Last weekend the second annual Maker Faire KC took place at Union Station, Kansas City’s 1914 beaux-arts train station.  The grandeur of the Union Station is hard to resist, but of course it really was the makers of the Midwest who made Maker Faire KC such a special event.

According to organizers Luis Rodriguez and Joy Torchia, the fair attendance doubled from last year to 10,000+, and the number of makers also doubled, to 230.  The fair’s exhibits truly mapped across the Maker Faire range, from deep craft through robotics to auto hacks. Noted exceptions to the rule were no bikes (?!), but an evident and exceptionally strong 3D printing community.

I’ve uploaded a survey of exhibits and makers here on the MAKE Flickr pool, but before going to the swath of pics, here’s a look at a few standout makers that had great stories and fun projects:

Josh Bookout’s “Selectric II,” an Ascii Art Type-O-Matic:

Josh turned an old IBM Selectric II electric typewriter into essentially a serial printer. He runs a text file through serial to Arduino, through a controller board, actuating one of the 14 solenoids. The wires attached to the solenoids pull Erector Set levers, which actuate the key presses, which in turn type out the ASCII art.

Josh has great build videos and posts on his site with more explanation—and lots of live typing! http://robotdialogs.com/

Bandit Guns of Missouri:

These super cool, laser cut rubber band “shotguns” sold out at the end of the first day! Shoot and then “pump” and another rubber band jumps up the staging “ladder,” ready to be fired.

The guns are awesome but Bandit Guns went above and beyond, designing and creating this equally beautiful shooting game target range. They have a great pistol version too. Find them at banditguns.com.

Weird Doctor Office by Prof. Yekaterina Maksimova:

You couldn’t really hear what was going on in Prof. Yekaterina Maksimova’s exam room, but you could watch. Here ArcAttack’s Joe DiPrima is getting his lifesignal checked. Somehow the Jacob’s ladder is involved (arcs were climbing behind Joe during the exam), as well as a lot of switches.

Anthony Clay’s series of Electrical Engineering Reference Posters:

In part thanks to a recent successful Kickstarter campaign, Anthony Clay has produced a series of four EE reference posters. Topics are Ohm’s Law and Resistors (“It’s the Law!”), Capacitors and Inductors, Transistors, and Microcontroller Quicknotes. These posters are great looking and definitely a great makerspace accessory.

Tom McGuire of Hack.Art.Lab and Witchita State University and his Foam Cutting Machine:

Tom’s computer-controlled cutter turned out perforated foam sheets that people could then punch apart and make wacky hats from.

The Foam Cutting Machine is a bit like a tattoo gun, with the needle made of a sharpened piano wire.

Randal Strong-Wallace and his roller coaster models:

Last year Randal brought five of his model roller coaster models to Maker Faire KC. They were such a hit that after the fair, they were given permanent exhibition space inside Union Station’s Science City. This year, Randall brought his tallest, steepest, fastest model yet: “Dragon’s Flight.” Randall has put together some great how-to videos at http://www.modelcoasters.com/buildamodelrollercoaster.htm For a fast insight into the making, check out his materials list: http://www.modelcoasters.com/modelmaterials.htm

Iron Man, War Machine, and Rescue from IBOT (Iron Brothers of Topeka):

The ratio of rad costume makers in Kansas City was surprisingly high. These guys, the Iron Brothers of Topeka, were just one (though definitely the most spectacular) of the characters roaming around the show. War Machine had a boombox integrated into his back, so they even had a SOUNDTRACK while they were walking around!

Kudos to ALL the makers who showed up at Maker Faire Kansas City, demonstrating to the globe that creativity is not a byproduct of coastline geography. For more pics, see my Flickr feed as well as Maker Faire KC on Facebook. See you in 2013!

2 Nights at an Automated Hotel with Control4

January 20, 2012 | by Lisa Montgomery

After a long day pounding the show floor pavement at the Consumer Electronic Show, it feels oh so nice to get back to the hotel room—even more so when that room is automated. I use the term “automated” loosely, as the only part of my two-night stay at the Aria that was truly automated was the first minute or so. As I entered the room for the first time, the drapes and sheers opened, music started playing the lights gradually brightened. Was I impressed? Yes. More than that, though, the welcome scenario made that smallish space seem a lot friendlier, and well, welcoming.

In typical Control4 style, wall-mounted keypads let me set groups of lights for reading, sleeping and waking up by just tapping a button. My favorite was the keypad by the door. Here, I could press a button to request that my room be serviced or that I not be disturbed. The appropriate icon by my door in the hallway illuminated to alert the Aria staff—kind of like hanging out a modern-day, electronic “Do Not Disturb” sign.

No Control4 system is complete without a touchpanel, and my room had one, as well as a hard-buttoned handheld remote. The touchpanel—the far sexier of the controls—happened to be on the nightstand by my side of the bed. Nice. My hubby got the remote. Both eager to test drive the controls, we started pushing buttons—in my case, icons. We toyed around with the window treatments, parting the shades half-way, leaving the drape open, closing both—any arrangement we could think of. The controls worked flawlessly. We played around with the lights, again, success. At times, the system got confused and devices failed to respond—we chalked it up to too many commands being thrown at it at the same time. Obviously, we needed to take turns.

If you need a little instruction in the use of the control system, Aria provides an online .PDF so you can study up before you arrive.

A nice feature of the Control4 system that came in particularly handy for my remote-wielding husband was the on-screen display. Using the buttons of the remote he could navigate the same interface that I could on the touchpanel. The only difference was that his interface showed up on the screen of the room’s ample-size flat-panel TV.

The main menu of this interface presented icons for controlling the motorized draperies, the lights, the thermostat, the audio and the video. The A/V should have been fun, but it ended up being quite frustrating. There were an awful lot of choices; scrolling through them was quite a chore, considering the “slow” response time of the Control4 system. I’d press a button; when I didn’t hear or see anything I’d naturally press the button again, which brought up a song I really didn’t want to hear or a show I really didn’t want to watch. Eventually, I learned to be patient—to let the system catch up with my commands. The same punch-and-wait exercise had to be applied when setting up a wakeup routine, which was one of the coolest high-tech features of my room. Using the touchpanel, I told the Control4 system to wake me up at 6 by opening the sheers and drapes, gradually bringing up the lights and playing music from a soft-rock station. It’s a much better way to wake up than to the sound of a blaring alarm.

All said and done—my stay was a hit. The automation system enhanced the luxurious design and atmosphere of the room. Once I was in that room, I never wanted to leave.

Putting Projects in Motion with the 555 Timer IC

Motors are the driving force behind many maker experiments, from hobby projects to more sophisticated robotics applications. Curious if it would be possible to reduce these generally complex motor controllers to a handful of common components, we set out on our latest hack, Projects in Motion: Control Three Types of Motors with 555 Timers.

Using little more than resistors, transistors, capacitors, wire, and power, along with at least one 555 timer and a pinch of CMOS logic, we were able to breadboard circuits capable of driving three common motor types: DC, servo, and stepper motor. In fact, our first experiment consists of only six parts: a potentiometer, DC motor, hookup wire, breadboard, two 555 timers, and a power supply. With only these parts, we were able to build an H-Bridge circuit, capable of driving our motor forwards and backwards.

But the real joy of this project is showing what is possible with a common 555 timer – this robust, versatile component’s hackability is seemingly limitless! Whether you want to perform a Light Theremin on stage, are curious about cybernetics, want to build a quiz show circuit, construct a radio, or even make a simple LED blinky, the 555 timer makes it possible!

The video below shows each of our motor hacks in action, and if you mod any of these circuits into your own experiments, be sure to send us an email of your build!

Zynga to Roll out Unified Gaming Platform, Multiplayer Gaming

Zynga announced Tuesday that it would build a social gaming network that provides a more unified gaming experience, whether players are on Facebook, iOS or Android devices.

Called Zynga with Friends, the network will allow people to play games against each other across the different platforms, even if one is on the Facebook website and the other on an iPhone, for instance.

They'll also have access to the same set of social features. They include group chat and the ability to find new friends -- or zFriends, as Zynga calls them -- and challenge them to play.

Outside developers will also be able to use the features with a new, streamlined set of APIs (application programming interfaces), Zynga's chief engineer Kostadis Roussos said, during Zynga's Unleashed event in San Francisco.

The company also announced a new crop of games, including two additions to its "ville" franchise that are coming soon: "The Ville," where players can build a home and host social activities, and "ChefVille," in which users set up and run their own restaurant.

It also launched "Matching With Friends," which is available for iOS devices Tuesday, and "Zynga Elite Slots," a casino game that's coming soon.

Zynga is also introducing multiplayer gaming, starting with the game Bubble Safari. It will extend the multiplayer feature to other games, including those outside developers host on the platform.

The Zynga With Friends network builds on early success of the gaming experience it has offered on Zynga.com since March, the company said. The features available to players on the Zynga.com website will now be expanded to players on Facebook or Android or iOS mobile apps. Developers will be able to access the features through the new Zynga API, the company said.

Zynga.com customized social streams for gaming, proposing new "zFriends," for example, based on similar gaming activity rather than shared social connections. The company says 70 percent of visitors to Zynga.com access the social stream it offers, which documents a user's gaming interactions. The stream will "soon" be available as part of Zynga With Friends, to game players on any device or platform, according to Manuel Bronstein, Zynga's general manager.

Zynga executive Rob Dyer, head of platform publishing, referred to a "separation of church and state" to assure developers that their ideas won't be poached. He also said Zynga is adopting a "very curated" approach for the platform, initially pursuing games that don't compete with its own offerings.

Roussos emphasized how technically difficult it is to deliver multiplayer gaming. At the busiest time of the day, Zynga games have as many active players as the city of Paris has residents, generating a million activities a second, Roussos said. Latency between server and client also presents a technical hurdle.

The company generates 8 terabytes of data a day, said Reed Shaffner, Zynga's director of product.

Zynga touts the value of its analytics to developers who use its platform. Analytics data and analysis show developers which features users like, so that they can continue to launch new experiences within the game, the company said.

The platform will launch with new developer partners 50 Cubes, Majesco and Portalarium as well as existing partners including Sava Transmedia, Mob Science and Row Sham Bow.

Asked for more details about when the platform would go live, Bronstein said, "You're going to see more like a progression than like this is the day that the platform became available."

NEWS FROM THE FUTURE – App Developers Too Young to Drive

News From The Future-36

App Developers Too Young to Drive @ WSJ.com:

Paul Dunahoo went on a business trip to San Francisco last week, where he attended technical sessions at Apple Inc.’s developer conference, networked with other programmers and received feedback from Apple engineers on his six productivity apps. Then, Mr. Dunahoo, chief executive of Bread and Butter Software LLC, returned to Connecticut to get ready for the eighth grade.

We’re always impressed to see maker-kids (The Maker Movement Belongs To The Kids Now…) – and it’s equally impressive to see young app developers starting to make their dent as well. What were you doing in 8th grade? Post up in the comments :)

GenAudio Launches New Surround Format

January 20, 2012 | by Rachel Cericola

Faux surround sound is nothing new. Soundbars and other smaller audio solutions typically have some type of technology that can provide the “illusion” of surround sound, without a 5.1 (or larger) speaker setup. GenAudio is hoping to be the next great surround sound solution, with AstoundSound for CE.

This newly launched technology promises to deliver surround sound without all of the speakers. Designed to work with headphones and two speaker devices, GenAudio says that the tech can deliver a realistic 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound experience.

AstoundSound for CE is software-based, which is what allows it to reproduce those 5.1 and 7.1 sounds. The company says that this has an advantage over competing spatial audio technology, because AstoundSound for CE has no tone colorization and remains in-phase.

The company also says that the tech will work in everything from digital TVs and set-top boxes to phones and gaming consoles, and much more.

“The introduction of our software based audio IP tech on small, low-cost processors coupled with our intuitive audio tuning tools provides manufacturers a way to quickly integrate spatialized audio playback capabilities into any new product where audio fidelity to the consumer is a critical component,” says Jerry Mahabub, founder and CEO of GenAudio. “Implementing AstoundSound in consumer devices will offer device manufacturers the opportunity to differentiate their multimedia products in a crowded consumer market!”

GenAudio is already incorporating AstoundSound audio IP software into devices, including the Analog Devices ADAU1761/1701 Sigma Studio DSP system-on-chip (SoC) audio processors as well as ADI’s SHARC processors and various other chip manufacturers. GenAudio says that the first products packing AstoundSound for CE launch will debut early this year.

Google Expected to Debut Kindle Rival This Week

With Google's developers conference just days away, more details about a tablet with the search giant's brand expected to be announced at the event have begun to leak out.

The latest details of the device, the Nexus 7, come from an apparent training document about the slate obtained by Gizmodo Australia.

Google's Nexus tablet? (Source: Gizmodo Australia)

If the details in that document are accurate, it appears that the Google tablet will be positioned squarely at Amazon's Kindle Fire. According to Gizmodo, Nexus 7 will be a 7-inch tablet with low-end pricing -- $199 for an 8GB version and $249 for a 16GB version. However, other sources report more aggressive pricing, such as $159 or $177.

By comparison, an 8GB Kindle Fire costs $199. While the tablet was a hot item during the holiday season, its popularity has been waning. A new version of the slate has been rumored for months, but nothing has appeared on the horizon yet. If a new model is introduced, pricing on the old model could sink to $149.

Nexus 7, which appears to be similar to a tablet displayed by Asus at this year's Consumer Electronic show, will reportedly also have a 7-inch display with a slightly higher resolution than Fire's -- 1280 by 800 compared to the Amazon product's 1024 by 600.

At the heart of Nexus 7, Gizmodo reported, will be a Nvidia Quad Core Tegra 3 processor running at 1.3GHz. It will also have a GeForce 12-core graphics processor.

In addition, it will have the latest version of the Android operating system, "Jellybean" 4.1. The leaked document also says Google will be responsible for all future operating updates for the device. In its agreements with phone handset makers, the OEMs are responsible for updates, not Google, which has been a source of problems for the entire ecosystem.

By comparison, Kindle Fire supports a restricted version of Android.

Nexus 7 will also supposedly have nine hours of batter life, a front-facing 1.2MP camera, 1GB of RAM, and support for NFC for Google Wallet and Android Beam.

Wireless connections through a cell phone network apparently won't be part of the Nexus 7 repertoire.

Google's decision to make a play for the low end of the tablet market could be a good one. According to one report, it's expecting to ship three million units by the end of the year. If it announces its slate this week, it'll beat Amazon's upgrade to Kindle Fire to market, and it won't be pinching Apple's turf, nor providing potential competition to Microsoft's new Surface tablet line. In addition, it'll be entering a segment of the market with a hunger for an all-purpose, low-priced tablet, a hunger, as Amazon discovered during the last holiday season can ignite high volume sales.

Malware Gets Snoopy

The world of malware has, over the last couple of decades, morphed to become not just a mechanism with which to subvert people's computers and steal money, but also a way for corporations and sovereign states to conduct cyber espionage.

An example of malware being used for industrial cyber espionage emerged two months ago with a worm, which had previously been quite rare, breaking out suddenly in Peru and neighboring countries.

This worm, specific to the electronic drafting software AutoCAD, is called ACAD/Medre.A and is written in AutoLISP, the language that is used to script operations in AutoCAD. ACAD/Medre.A has a very devious agenda: It e-mails copies of the drawings the user opens to over 40 mail boxes hosted at two different Chinese ISPs.

The antivirus firm ESET in San Diego was the first to detect the outbreak in Peru and noted that they could "see detections at specific URLs, which made it clear that a specific website supplied [an infected] AutoCAD template that appears to be the basis for this localized spike ... If it is assumed that companies which want to do business with [the company at the URL] have to use this template, it seems logical that the malware mainly shows up in Peru and neighboring countries. The same is true for larger companies with affiliated offices outside this area that have been asked to assist or to verify the – by then – infected project and then [infect] their own environment."

In other words, someone or some organization -- not necessarily in China -- planted the infected template. As a result they were able to swipe the drawings of all of the companies competing for some project, presumably to gain an edge in securing business.

ESET estimates that something like 100,000 drawings were stolen before ESET, with the help of Autodesk, the Chinese National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center, and the Chinese ISPs involved, were able to contain the problem. For a detailed look at the technology behind the attack, see the posting "ACAD/Medre.A Technical Analysis" in the ESET Threat Blog.

ESET now offers a free, stand-alone cleaner which will search for and remove ACAD/Medre.A infections.

Lessons from Stuxnet

So industrial cyber espionage is a big deal, but even more impressive and much more worrying is military cyber espionage because the stakes and consequences are much higher.

And there's a serious problem with military cyber espionage: In the real world if someone attacks you with something like a cruise missile, once it's landed you won't be able to put the missile back together and lob it back at whoever sent it. That's the nature of real-world armaments. You can build really smart and deadly devices and, even if they malfunction, the enemy will very, very rarely be able to turn your technology against you.

Not so with software armaments. Consider the much-discussed Stuxnet, the computer worm that first appeared about two years ago. Stuxnet targets Siemens industrial control systems and is said to be responsible for damaging equipment used by the Iranian nuclear program.

The Stuxnet worm is an impressive example of sophisticated software engineering relying, as it did, on four new zero-day attacks along with several known vulnerability exploits used by other malware.

On top of that, Stuxnet it is very complex. According to an article in Vanity Fair, "In terms of functionality, this was the largest piece of malicious software that most researchers had ever seen, and orders of magnitude more complex in structure. (Malware's previous heavyweight champion, the Conficker worm, was only one-twentieth the size of this new threat.)"

When the worm was discovered and publicized in June 2010, there was an immediate denial-of-service attack on two mail lists that concern industrial systems security which, it could be assumed, was intended to slow down dissemination of the news to the worm's targets. You can see that contingent damage was involved in supporting the original attack -- a consequence that will become more commonplace in future where military cyber espionage is involved.

Since the first discovery of Stuxnet there have been at least two more variants identified, each incorporating "improvements" that were designed to do things such as increase the infection rate of the malware.

So, who was responsible for this stupendous feat of coding? The Russian mafia? Chinese hackers? Nope, just a few weeks ago it was revealed that Stuxnet was created by a joint U.S. and Israeli intelligence operation called "Operation Olympic Games" which was started under the Bush administration and expanded under the Obama administration!

Apparently Stuxnet did its job because, it is estimated, some 1000 centrifuges used by the Iranians to purify nuclear material that are controlled by Siemens systems, were damaged during the period Stuxnet was active.

Mission of Malware

Whether this was all that was intended is unknown, and a report by the Institute for Science and International Security says: "If Stuxnet's goal was the destruction of all the centrifuges in the [Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) at Natanz], Stuxnet failed. But if its goal was to destroy a more limited number of centrifuges and set back Iran's progress in operating FEP while making detection of the malware difficult, it may have succeeded, at least for a while."

Interestingly, a worm considered a descendent of Stuxnet, Duqu, now appears to be currently designed to steal information, but its modular architecture suggests that it could be tasked with other goals in future versions.

Even more intriguingly, Duqu appears to have been coded in an odd programming language which researchers have called "the Duqu Framework." This framework has since been identified by Kaspersky Labs as a custom version of C called Object Oriented C complied with the Microsoft Visual Studio compiler.

I'd suggest that Stuxnet and Duqu as military cyber espionage weapons were actually failures, not because they probably only caused limited damage, but because we launched a weapon that can, and will, be turned against us.

Why? Because code is code. It's a set of ideas frozen into binary and when you execute that code -- when you make the ideas actually do something -- the bits don't vanish and the ideas don't get mangled. They're still there. No matter how much you encrypt, hide, and obfuscate your code and your ideas, there's always someone, somewhere who can decrypt, find, and unobfuscate all of it.

Even when the malware is military grade, it would be foolish to assume that the enemy can't profit from our research and development, because when we attack they get a clean copy of the weapon we attack them with. And there are lots of really clever people out there, clever people who don't live in the U.S. and who don't have our best interests at heart. They have access to powerful computers and software just like we do and they are more than capable of decoding what we've sent out and turning our ideas against us.

So, my friends, we're on the verge of a new world of hurt for the enterprise. Cyber espionage, both industrial and military, is coming of age, and in our efforts to compromise the plans and programs of other nations and enterprises, we're also spreading what are, in effect, the prototypes for sophisticated advanced software weapons that will eventually be available for anyone with the need, the opportunity, and the guts to use them. Taming Your E-Mailbox

You want to reduce your reliance on e-mail -- but the rest of the world still wants to send you 100 messages a day. And you're not sure whether to cut it out entirely, or just a little bit at a time.

How can you decide when to use e-mail, and when to use other methods for communication? The experts weigh in:

Do use e-mail for messages that can’t wait to be “found”

“If you never go to the Jingle site, you’ll miss important messages,” says The Motley Fool’s Jeb Bishop, VP of creative services. “If the building’s on fire, we’ll send that out on e-mail as well.”

Do use e-mail for communicating with customers

“Probably the biggest reason we use e-mail is to interact with the customer,” says Seva’s founder, Vas Maniatis. For one thing, e-mail is ubiquitous. According to one ComScore report, “e-mail remains one of the most popular activities on the web, reaching more than 70 percent of the U.S online population each month.”

Do use e-mail for documentation

For liability reasons, companies must keep records of their communications. Aditya Johri, assistant professor at Virginia Tech, says that this concern has slowed the shift from e-mail to alternative forms of communication.

Do use e-mail for private discussions

Not everything topic is meant for the group. When it comes to discussing compensation or complaints, for instance, e-mail is still king.

Don't use email if you're worried about overload

There’s too much of the stuff. “Everybody’s at a point where they are overloaded or they know they’re about to be,” says Shortmail’s CEO, Dave Troy. “Our target market is people who, even if they spent all day every day responding to e-mail, they still wouldn’t be able to get ahead.”

Don't use e-mail if you can't deal with spam

Unwanted messages contribute significantly to the drudgery of sifting through e-mail. According to the security company Symantec, spam made up 68 percent of all email sent in 2011 (down significantly from a high of 90 percent in 2010).

Don't use e-mail if you need to find the right answer fast

When you don’t know whom to direct a question to, it may take many e-mail attempts before you track down someone who can help -- if you find the right person at all. “There’s nothing discoverable about email,” points out Yammer CEO David Sacks. “It’s either addressed to you or not.”

Don't use e-mail for sensitive conversations

E-mail lacks nuance and is easily misunderstood. A quick test: If clicking Reply All by accident would be a disaster, you’re better off talking in person.

NEWS FROM THE FUTURE – Quadcopter Art – Suspicion of Terrorism?

News From The Future-35

Pt 1163Pt 1164

Quadcopter drone group held in London airport on suspicion of terrorism:

Fresh from performing at Science Gallery in Dublin last night during the opening of Hack the City, an English group of urbanists, technologists and architects who created GPS-enabled quadcopter drones, were held at London Southend Airport on suspicion of terrorism and recorded under the UK’s Terrorism Act.

The group, known as Tomorrows Thoughts Today, had been performing their Electronic Countermeasures robotic ballet in the sky show at Science Gallery for the opening of the three-month Hack the City exhibition in Dublin City.

The trio, headed up by Liam Young, had created the robotic drones from components that were originally intended for police surveillance.

The drones had been swarming around Science Gallery last night to show how they can broadcast their own Wi-Fi network as a flying pirate file-sharing formation.
As they swarm, people in the audience can log onto the drone network with their phones and laptops and use the drones as a local network to upload files and share data with one another.

How Alan Turing Set the Rules for Computing

On Saturday, British mathematician Alan Turing would have turned 100 years old. It is barely fathomable to think that none of the computing power surrounding us today was around when he was born.

Alan Turing

But without Turing's work, computers as we know them today simply would not exist, Robert Kahn, co-inventor of the TCP/IP protocols that run the Internet, said in an interview. Absent Turing, "the computing trajectory would have been entirely different, or at least delayed," he said.

For while the idea of a programmable computer has been around since at least 1837 -- when English mathematician Charles Babbage formulated the idea of his analytical engine -- Turing was the first to do the difficult work of mapping out the physics of how the digital universe would operate. And he did it using a single (theoretical) strip of infinite tape.

"Turing is so fundamental to so much of computer science that it is hard to do anything with computers that isn't some way influenced by his work," said Eric Brown, who was a member of the IBM team that built the "Jeopardy"-winning Watson supercomputer.

A polymath of the highest order, Turing left a list of achievements stretching far beyond the realm of computer science. During World War II, he was instrumental in cracking German encrypted messages, allowing the British to anticipate Germany's actions and ultimately help win the war. Using his mathematical chops, he also developed ideas in the field of non-linear biological theory, which paved the way for chaos and complexity theories. And to a lesser extent he is known for his sad demise, an apparent suicide after being persecuted by the British government for his homosexuality.

But it may be computer science where his legacy will be the most strongly felt. Last week, the Association of Computing Machinery held a two-day celebration of Turing, with the computer field's biggest luminaries -- Vint Cerf, Ken Thompson, Alan C. Key -- paying tribute to the man and his work.

Contemplating Computations

Turing was not alone in thinking about computers in the early part of the past century.

ematicians had been thinking about computable functions for some time. Turing drew from colleagues' work at Princeton University during the 1930s. There, Alonzo Church was defining Lambda calculus (which later formed the basis of the Lisp programming language). And Kurt Gödel worked on the incompleteness theory and recursive function theory. Turing employed the work of both mathematicians to create a conceptual computing machine.

His 1936 paper described what would later become known as the Turing Machine, or a-machine as he called it. In the paper, he described a theoretical operation that used an infinitely long piece of tape containing a series of symbols. A machine head could read the symbols on the tape as well as add its own symbols. It could move about to different parts of the tape, one symbol at a time.

Alan Mathison Turing, June 23, 1912 – June 7, 1954. Statue by sculptor Stephen Kettle.

"The Turing machine gave some ideas about what computation was, what it would mean to have a program," said James Hendler, a professor of computer science at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and one of the instrumental researchers of the semantic Web. "Other people were thinking along similar lines, but Turing really put it in a formal perspective, where you could prove things about it."

On its own, a Turing Machine could never be implemented. For one, "infinite tapes are hard to come by," Kahn joked. But the concept proved invaluable for the ideas it introduced into the world. "Based on the logic of what was in the machine, Turing showed that any computable function could be calculated," Kahn said.

Today's computers, of course, use binary logic. A computer program can be thought of as an algorithm or set of algorithms that a compiler converts into a series of 1's and 0's. In essence, they operate exactly like the Turing Machine, absent the tape.

"It is generally accepted that the Turing Machine concept can be used to model anything a digital computer can do," explained Chrisila Pettey, who heads the Department of Computer Science at Middle Tennessee State University.

Thanks to Turing, "any algorithm that manipulates a finite set of symbols is considered a computational procedure," Pettey said in an interview via e-mail.

Conversely, anything that cannot be modeled in a Turing Machine could not run on a computer, which is vital information for software design. "If you know that your problem is intractable, and you don't have an exponential amount of time to wait for an answer, then you'd better focus on figuring out a way to find an acceptable alternative instead of wasting time trying to find the actual answer," Pettey said.

"It's not that computer scientists sit around proving things with Turing Machines, or even that we use Turing Machines to solve problems," Pettey said. "It's that how Turing Machines were used to classify problems has had a profound influence on how computer scientists approach problem solving."

Verizon Gives Motorola LTE Razrs Their GSM Wings

Verizon Wireless is activating GSM roaming capability for the first time on LTE handsets, turning on radios that were already built into the Motorola Droid Razr and Droid Razr Maxx.

Verizon has the biggest 4G LTE footprint in the U.S., but its 4G phones so far have been limited when users traveled overseas. For roaming, they have relied on 3G CDMA technology, which reduced their travel range to about 40 countries.

Now, along with an upgrade to Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, Verizon is pushing out software that activates the GSM radios in the two Motorola smartphones. As soon as subscribers get the update, which started going out Friday, they can use international roaming in about 150 countries.

Occasional travelers can talk on foreign carrier networks at rates ranging from $0.69 per minute in Canada to $4.99 per minute in Kenya, Sri Lanka and several other countries. A $4.99-per-month Value Plan reduces those rates. Data roaming, on networks with speeds up to 3G, costs $0.02 per kilobyte or $20.48 per megabyte in most countries, or $25 per month for 100MB.

Subject to restrictions, Verizon can also allow subscribers to go to a foreign carrier and buy a new SIM card to replace the one in their Razr or Razr Maxx, spokeswoman Brenda Raney said. They would then pay the foreign carrier's rates, while also relying on that carrier for support, she said. Verizon subscribers can't use the phones on GSM-based carriers in the U.S., she said.

The two Motorola phones are equipped with radios for GSM in the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz bands, and for 3G HSPA in the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz bands, Raney said.

Verizon offers several 3G CDMA handsets that include GSM "world phone" capability, but the Razr and Razr Maxx are its first LTE phones with this feature. Verizon said it plans to offer more global phones in the future, without giving details.

Despite most 4G carriers around the world converging on LTE as their technology of choice, it's likely to take years for roaming on that high-speed system to take shape. The frequencies that different operators are using for LTE are too varied, industry observers say. The international industry group Next-Generation Mobile Networks is trying to foster consensus on a few bands where LTE could be available in many countries, but regulatory and business needs make that a complicated task, executives said last week at the NGMN's annual conference in San Francisco.

The Droid Razr was introduced in November 2011 and the Droid Razr Maxx in January 2012. Subscribers probably have been waiting this long for global roaming capability because the software wasn't ready when the phones first shipped, said analyst Avi Greengart of Current Analysis. International roaming typically isn't a high priority, because only a minority of subscribers use it, he said.

"International roaming is one of those things that is not important broadly," Greengart said. Most U.S. mobile subscribers don't leave the country, and most of those who do only need voice service when they travel. But some business users need both voice and data overseas, and those tend to be higher level executives, he said.

"The most important thing about these executives is that the ones who travel the most are often the ones ... in senior positions who can then mandate that other people in their firm use Verizon," Greengart said. Subscribers on corporate plans, like those on family plans, are especially valued because they are less likely to switch carriers, he added.

How To Turn Old Car Parts Into an Atari Controller

Friend of Make:  Jason Torchinsky hacked a vintage Oldsmobile seat control to work as an Atari joystick. He explains how to raid the junk yard and build your own using any of a variety of switches and buttons found in old cars.

As Jason says:

The idea came to me while adjusting the mirrors in a car, and realizing that the little mirror-control joystick was better than many video game joysticks I used. I then had a waking dream of the grand possibilities of playing old videogames with control pads sourced from cars. The dream was a beautiful, fantastical vision of a world we could all achieve. I woke up hours later behind a CVS, and headed straight to a junkyard to make this dream real.

Check out his Car Hacks post on Jalopnik for more info and a sweet video of Jason using it to play Ms. Pac Man.

iPad-Programmable LED Wall

Greg Friedland of San Francisco, CA, wrote in with his 32-square-foot LED matrix.

The lights in the Aurora consist of a grid of 544 RGB LEDs capable of ~16 million colors attached to a 4′ by 8′ wood board. The LEDs are controlled by a microcontroller, which is in turn controlled by a program running on a laptop. The computer is the brain of the system, being responsible for creating the graphics that appear on the wall, and the microcontroller relays the messages to the LEDs. The PC software connects to software running on an iPad, which allows interaction with the moving patterns. Also, the Aurora has a mode where the builtin programs respond to music, bouncing and flashing with the beat, turning it into a VJ of sorts.
